Famous for the Monaco Grand Prix in May, the streets of Monte Carlo become a racetrack for the Formula 1 champions to battle it out towards the chequered flag.It is also well-known for its association with the late Princess Grace of Monaco, the former film-actress Grace Kelly, whose Palace can be visited. Somerset Maugham described Monte Carlo as "a sunny place for shady people", but nevertheless it is fun to visit and look at its casinos, high-rise apartments, ritzy shops and magnificent yachts in the harbour.

Villefranche sur mer

Villefranche sur mer is just a short bus ride away. Here, you can enjoy boutiquey shops, sandy beach, picturesque harbour, restaurants overlooking the sea and visit the pretty Chappelle St Pierre with artist Jean Cocteau's décor.

St-Paul-de-Vence

St-Paul-de-Vence with its ancient ramparts and superb hillside position, is the home of the outstanding Foundation Maeght (0033 4 93 41 26 00 / www.fondation-maeght.com) which houses 20th century sculpture, drawings and paintings by artists like Chagall, Braque, Miro, some of which is in a superb outdoor natural setting.
